Fees and Discounts

There is no denying private school fees are very expensive, even before paying extras for special additional lessons with learning support staff. The average London day prep charges in excess of £15,000 per annum and the average boarding prep elsewhere more than £20,000 per annum. Senior day schools now often exceed £20,000 and boarding schools £35,000. Private education has become very expensive, especially when it has to be paid for out of after tax income and even more so when you have more than one child.

A few mainstream schools might take mild SEN children with no extras, but the majority charge fixed fees for extra lessons

Specialist SEN schools rarely publish their fee scales because they are so high. In London you might pay £30,000 per annum for a day school for dyslexics. In the provinces you might end up paying £60,000 to £100,000 per annum for a residential SEN school for an autistic child. The only reason some of these schools exist is because Local Authorities are paying the fees for children they have assessed.

Traditionally, private school discounts are available by way of scholarships (for gifted and talented children) or bursaries (for financially disadvantaged families). Since very few SEN children would pass tests or auditions for scholarships, a parent’s main hope would be a bursary which is means tested.
